OUR STORY

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide affordable housing that meets identified community needs, enhances the quality of life of residents, and achieves the highest possible standard of energy efficiency for our buildings.

Our Goals

  • Provide safe, affordable housing that is designed to foster a sense of community, encouraging long term tenancy.

  • Utilize design and construction principles that meet the highest possible standard in energy efficiency, yielding a healthy living environment, lower operating costs, and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

  • Implement water conservation measures such as the use of water efficient fixtures and appliances in order to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions

  • Provide outdoor living spaces that are designed to enhance the health and quality of life of residents of all ages.

  • Proximity to public transit, daycare centres, and grocery stores is a priority in property selection.

Established in 2010, we are an organization that works to create a sense of community in each of our apartment buildings.

Maitland Street Village

The Maitland Street Village offers one, two and three bedroom suites with one full and one half bathroom in each three bedroom unit. It  has a total of 46 units including 11 one-bedroom adapted suites. It offers electric charging stations, community gardens and a children's  play area.

As a recipient of the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board's 2022 award for Vancouver Island's best affordable housing development, this building was the first affordable low rise apartment building in B.C. to achieve step 4 using the BC Building Step Code.

Maitland Street tenants benefit from living in a step 4 building. In this all-electric building hydro costs are extremely low, currently costing $20 - $25 per three bedroom suite. A heat pump in each suite provides warmth during the winter months and cooling during the summer season.

High View Apartments

In 2016 the Alberni Low Energy Housing Society purchased and renovated the High View Apartment building with generous support from BC Housing. With significant improvements to the living environment we have provided bachelor and one-bedroom suites that meet the overwhelming demand for affordable housing. The cost of utilities are included in the rent.
